Spring break is a time to have fun, but if you’re newly sober or curious about sobriety, it can be difficult to find the fun in a party setting. If you’re used to drinking every night and waking up hungover on Monday mornings, going out without alcohol might seem impossible at first. But there are plenty of ways to have fun without booze!

Avoiding alcohol is going to be a challenge at first.

It’s important to be honest: there will almost definitely be tons of alcohol everywhere. You’re going to be tempted. You can’t control other people’s drinking, and you’ve got to figure out how to stay sober in the face of all that temptation. If you don’t have a plan for it yet, now is the time!

  • Have a backup plan for social events: Find another activity that will keep you busy and engaged with friends who aren’t drinking (or who are also sober), so that when they go out after midnight and want everyone else to join them at bars or clubs, there’s an alternative option available.
  • Don’t assume everyone else will be okay with your sobriety. People who are accustomed to drinking might be surprised at how much harder it is for someone who isn’t; some might even try to pressure others into joining them for drinks or shots just because “it’s what we always do.” Be prepared for these kinds of reactions and be ready to respond using the tips below.
